Futurama & New Coke - CLee
I happened to be browsing through Youtube when I came across an episode of Futurama. The episode was titled "Fry visits the Slurm Factory". As I watched the episode I saw a funny clip and what did I hear? A joke about New Coke.
The leader of the company known as "Slurm" comes up with a brilliant plan. That plan is to create a "New Slurm" with a new taste and when consumers begin to protest and want to the original back, the company will then bring back the original recipe.
I still find it shocking that Coke could have so much meaning for consumers that an uproar over New Coke could occur as it did. Not to mention that a cartoon would reference this time in history. If you wish to view this episode you can click here

I too have seen this episode, and until reading this, didn't realize that they were making fun of New Coke.
Although in class we debated the reasons why the company chose to make that change, I feel that this may have represented Coke's attempt at offering an even better "All-amazing" product to the people. Already bogged down by co-branding, sub brands, all originating from the original, Coke may have seen a super brand as the next move for the all-mighty flavor. Tylenol, for example, made a very smart move with Extra Strength Tylenol, and perhaps Coke thought that an even better coke would strike a chord with those consumers who are always looking for the new and edgy alternative to the everyday and mundane.
While this move was risky, Coke came out victorious in the end, and re-discovered the true fans of their beverage.
