KFC is changing its logo!!

KFC is changing its logo. The famous KFC founder Colonel Sanders’ picture has been the logo for the company since it was founded. The new logo will feature Colonel Sanders in a bolder colors and a better-defined visage, and he will still keep his classic black bow tie, glasses and goatee. Moreover, the name “Kentucky Fried Chicken” on smiling Colonel Sanders’ red apron will become “Kentucky Chicken” due to company’s expanded non-fried menu items targeting the health conscious group. The company will start putting up the new logos in January 2007.

In addition, the company will start to redesign its existing stores and will open up new stores in the US that will feature warmer interior colors, open shop-style glass windows and a digital jukebox that plays customer-selected music for free. The company will push the new design and logo to its international stores as well.

I think it is so interesting that companies like McDonald’s, KFC, and Pepsi Co. are all trying to change their junk food image to a healthier image in order to follow the health conscious trend. I am really looking forward for the new changes!!

I think it is really interesting how companies are changing their images to appeal to the new health conscious trends. I wrote a blog earlier about how coca cola and Pepsi are investing into products under a different brand that are healthier and contain vitamins. For KFC, the term "fried" has more negative connotations than it did in the past. Usually people think of oily, fatty, and unhealthy when they hear the word fried, so it's good that they are taking it out of the logo.
Its great that KFC is keeping the design of colonel sanders and just enhancing it because i think that there are strong associations linked to the traditional Colonel Sanders and the southern image it represents.

I think it is very appropriate for KFC to update its image. I agree that it is important to keep Colonel Sanders becuase of his associations, and I don't think updating him will hurt their image at all. (Just think of the changes made to Betty Crocker or the Brawny Man over the years to keep them current.) To keep competitive it is important to offer healthier alternatives, but I feel fast food restaurants need to be careful not to try to upscale their brand too much by changing their stores too drastically - they are still a place to get a quick, cheap bite to eat. I remember about a year ago McDonalds changed some of its locations to resemble a slightly more upscale(compared to its current locations) sit-down restaurant. Whether this was successful or not I never heard, but for me, my associations with McDonalds did not change.

Its funny how KFC is thinking of out-of-the-box in promoting the new logo.

KFC actually committed to making the new logo out 65,000 tiles in the Nevada desert, so that it could be seen from the space. Now if you're an alien or a human panning over the Nevada desert on a global mapping program, you might accidentally be exposed to the new KFC logo.
